Blood Orange Old Fashioned
Posted while listening to the Sex Pistols
This spin on the classic Old Fashioned remains true to the original with a fun summery take.
The Recipe 1.5oz Rittenhouse Rye
0.25oz Blood Orange Simple Syrup
2-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
In a mixing glass, stir together bitters and simple syrup, when it's good and blended, add the rye and ice stirring until well mixed. Strain into a rocks glass over a large single ice cube. Garnish with a slice of blood orange from the simple syrup.
To make the Blood Orange Simple Syrup, Mix 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water, bring to a simmer and stir until sugar is dissolved. Slice a single blood orange and add slices to your mix. Turn off heat and let steep for 30 minutes.
Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Old Fashioned's. I generally find them too sweet and vastly prefer a glass of rye/bourbon neat or a Manhattan. This also explains my preference for rye over bourbon in cocktails and sipping bourbons over ryes. Bourbon adds sweetness, Rye adds spiciness.
I also think this cocktail works well for my palette as the simple syrup doesn't use juice but rather a steeping to capture the essence of the blood orange rather than a full blown assault of blood orange.
